President Joe Biden is reported to have approved the provision of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, despite previously reinstating a ban on such weapons, according to The Washington Post and Reuters. The mines are equipped with self-destructing batteries designed to deactivate when their power runs out, reducing risks to civilians.

The aid aims to help Ukraine slow down Russian advances in the eastern regions. While some support this as a necessary defensive measure, the decision has drawn significant criticism due to humanitarian concerns and its potential impact on global efforts to ban anti-personnel mines.

This move follows the U.S. allowing Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles for deep strikes within Russian territory, further escalating regional tensions. Notably, the U.S., Russia, and China are not signatories to the Ottawa Treaty, which bans anti-personnel mines.
