Lawmakers Push for TikTok Ban in U.S. Amid National Security Concerns

The chair and top Democrat of the U.S. House committee on China urged Google-parent Alphabet and Apple to prepare for TikTok's removal from their app stores by January 19. A U.S. federal court upheld a law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok in the U.S. or face a ban. Lawmakers, including Representative John Moolenaar and Raja Krishnamoorthi, emphasized the need to protect U.S. national security and urged TikTok to proceed with a divestiture.

ByteDance and TikTok are seeking a temporary block from the U.S. Supreme Court, warning that the ban would make TikTok unusable in the U.S. The DOJ stated the ban would not immediately impact users who already have the app but would eventually render it non-functional due to lack of support. ByteDance highlighted concerns about the law's impact on millions of American users, while Republican Senator Josh Hawley underscored the threat of Chinese government oversight.
