An avian flu outbreak, suspected to be highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), is believed to be the cause of death for over 60 Canada geese, swans, and ducks found at Billington Sea pond in Plymouth. Smaller outbreaks have also been reported statewide.

State agencies, including MassWildlife and the Department of Agricultural Resources, are advising the public to avoid handling sick or dead birds to reduce the risk of infection, which is rare but possible with prolonged exposure.

The Cape Wildlife Center has been assisting in testing, euthanizing suffering birds, and safely removing carcasses to prevent further spread. Avian flu can affect wild and domestic birds, as well as mammals like foxes, and some infected birds may show no symptoms.

Officials urge the public to report sightings of sick or dead birds and take precautions, such as avoiding wildlife and keeping pets away from affected areas.
